In Vitro Fertilization in Birmingham, AL

There’s nothing simple about trying to grow your family when things aren’t going as planned. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is one of the most advanced fertility treatments available, and for many, it offers a real path forward when other doors have closed. Whether it’s due to blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm quality, or unexplained infertility, IVF works by taking fertilization into the hands of our experienced team and carefully guiding each step in a state-of-the-art lab.

At ACRM, we use techniques like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to give each egg its best chance of fertilization. From there, we closely monitor embryo development before transferring it back into the uterus. Every part of the process is done in our Brookwood facility in Birmingham, AL, where leading technology meets compassionate care. IVF isn’t always the first step in your fertility journey, but it’s often the most hopeful one.

Real-Life Reasons to Consider IVF Treatment

Offering hope to those navigating fertility challenges.

IVF is a flexible, advanced treatment that can support a wide range of fertility challenges, including both female and male factor infertility. Whether you’ve been told your fallopian tubes are blocked, your egg count is low, or your partner’s sperm has poor motility, IVF offers a path that bypasses many of those roadblocks.

You might consider IVF if you’re navigating:

  • Low ovarian reserve
  • Age-related infertility
  • Anovulation (irregular or absent ovulation)
  • Endometriosis
  • Male factor infertility
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Tubal ligation (previously having your “tubes tied”)

This is also a powerful option for individuals and couples using donor sperm or eggs, as well as single mothers by choice, or LGBTQ+ families. If carrying a pregnancy is your goal, IVF can create that opportunity, regardless of what brought you here.

A Step-by-Step IVF Process

Feel informed, empowered, and ready for the next steps.
1

Fertility Evaluation & Testing

Before beginning IVF, you’ll meet with your fertility specialist for a comprehensive evaluation. This may include hormone testing, ultrasounds, semen analysis, and a medical history review.

2

Ovarian Stimulation

You’ll take hormone medications to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Throughout this process, you’ll come in for frequent monitoring appointments so we can track your response and adjust medication as needed.

3

Egg Retrieval & Sperm Collection

Once your follicles are ready, a minor outpatient procedure is performed to retrieve the eggs. On the same day, a sperm sample is collected from a partner. Both are then handed off to our embryology team.

4

Fertilization in the Lab

Using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a single sperm is injected directly into each mature egg to encourage fertilization. The coolest part? You get to watch this process entirely, allowing you to be a part of embryo development from the beginning.

5

Embryo Transfer

One healthy embryo is selected and transferred into your uterus quickly and gently. Any remaining embryos can be frozen for future use. You’ll then begin the two-week wait before taking a pregnancy test.

6

Embryo Cryopreservation as an Optional Step

If you choose to freeze embryos for future cycles, they will be stored securely using TMRW’s automated cryopreservation platform. This technology offers 24/7 digital monitoring and traceable storage for added peace of mind.

Comprehensive genetic testing to support healthier outcomes.

At ACRM, we partner with Gattaca Genomics and Igenomix to offer advanced preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). This is an optional service that involves carefully removing a few cells from the outer layer of an embryo and sending them for analysis before transfer.

There are two main types of testing available:

  • PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies): Checks whether an embryo has the correct number of chromosomes. This test can identify chromosomally normal embryos and provides information about the embryo’s sex.
  • PGT-M (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Disorders): Screens for more than 300 inherited genetic conditions. By identifying healthy embryos before transfer, PGT-M helps patients make informed decisions for the future.

Here to Answer All Your In Vitro Fertilization Questions Openly & Honestly

While transferring more than one embryo is technically possible, our clinic strongly emphasizes elective single embryo transfer (eSET). We intentionally transfer just one embryo at a time, not by preference but for safety.

Twin pregnancies come with significantly higher risks, including a 50% chance of premature birth. This can lead to serious complications like stillbirth, cerebral palsy, low birth weight, vision issues, and long-term developmental challenges.

Thanks to advanced lab techniques and embryo freezing methods, success rates with a single fresh embryo followed by a frozen embryo later are often higher than transferring two embryos at once. This approach improves the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy and reduces complications for both the parent and baby.

Insurance coverage for IVF can feel like navigating a maze, and unfortunately, it varies depending on your provider, policy, and state of residence.

Some plans offer full or partial coverage, including diagnostic testing, medications, or specific parts of the IVF cycle. Others may exclude fertility treatments entirely. The best way to find out what’s included in your plan is to speak directly with your insurance provider. We’re also happy to help you with benefit verification and guide you through the financial side of care.

If your plan doesn’t cover IVF, we have financing options available to help make treatment more manageable. Parenthood shouldn’t be out of reach because of confusing fine print.
