Getting a fertility treatment involves many challenges. Not least of all, the treatment journey is a significant emotional commitment that has its ups and down. Even though you planned to tackle this chapter of your life as a team effort with your partner, there can be many frustrations along the way that leave the two of you feeling disconnected. You and your partner may experience different feelings and needs about certain aspects of the fertility treatment. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you stay on the same page with your partner.
Here are few tips on how to do stay connected:
Communicate, communicate, communicate. Schedule regular check-in times with your partner to make sure you are honestly sharing what you are thinking and feeling. Don’t leave yourself guessing about how each of you are experiencing the fertility journey. Having an open dialogue creates a safe place where you can bring up any issues or frustrations. Learn to talk through and accept your differences during the fertility journey. This will help you support each other to the best of your ability during the treatment process.
Get support. Enlist the help of a professional counselor if you need one! The counselor can help you talk through your problems and create goals to move forward. Connecting with friends, family, and support groups can also help you feel grounded and supported during the treatment process.
Sex and intimacy. Even though there will be limitations when it comes to sex, you can still be intimate in other ways like holding hands, hugging, and cuddling. For the specific times when you can have sex, you can make it special by making it more meaningful—think a romantic date instead of just an ordinary night together. This can create a more natural feeling creating undue pressure.
Lighten it up. Fertility treatment can seem all-consuming with the constant stream of appointments, tests, procedures, and monitoring. It’s easy to fall into the habit of only talking about the fertility process. Spending quality time with your partner when you’re not thinking about fertility is a precious thing. It’s important to regularly lift your mood and be happy and carefree to take your mind away from the treatment. Whether it’s taking a walk on a pretty day, watching your favorite shows together, or something more out-of-the-box like trying to conquer an escape room together, carve out time for fun activities you and your partner can do together and feel connected to one another.
